Originally built as Bankside Power Station in the 1940s, Tate Modern transformed a once-iconic industrial landmark into one of the world’s leading contemporary art museums. After the power station closed in 1981, the Tate acquired the site and partnered with architects Herzog & de Meuron to reimagine the building as a groundbreaking gallery, which opened in 2000.
Today, Tate Modern continues to evolve with innovative spaces like the underground Tanks and the striking Blavatnik Building, designed to showcase performance and installation art while preserving the building’s industrial heritage.
