The Monobloc chair, the most common chair in the world, was designed in 1946 by Canadian designer Douglas C. Simpson. Its name comes from the fact that it is molded from a single piece of plastic (mono: one, bloc: block). Its low production cost and stackable design made it an easy solution for mass seating. However, its popularity has caused problems for some, leading to a ban in Basel, Switzerland, for a few years due to its negative impact on the cityscape—the Allibert Group and Grosfillex Group mass-produced variations of this one-piece chair in the 1970s. French engineer Henry Massonnet is also credited with inventing the Monobloc, introducing his Fauteuil 300 design in 1972, inspired by Joe Colombo's Universale 4867 Chair from 1965. Despite its widespread production, no patents were filed for the design.
